Farrukh Awan, MD, an associate professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW), and a member of the Division of Hematology and Oncology at UTSW’s Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center and William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital, discusses the importance of collaborative care in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The field of CLL continues to excel forward\u00a0with novel\u00a0molecular biomarkers\u200b, new therapeutic options, and\u00a0ongoing clinical trials,\u00a0says Awan.<\/p>\n

Despite this, CLL\u00a0remains\u00a0a complex\u00a0disease, Awan adds. As such, closely\u00a0\u200bcollaboration between community oncologists and CLL\u00a0experts is\u00a0often necessary to ensure\u00a0patients receiv\u200be optimal care.<\/p>\n

Moreover,\u00a0\u200bindividuals who treat many cases of CLL may be able to recommend ongoing clinical trials that community oncologists are not aware of,\u00a0Awan adds.<\/p>\n

Ultimately,\u00a0\u200bcollaborative care is needed\u00a0to identify new treatment\u200bs\u00a0and testing options,\u00a0and to improve upon available\u00a0therapies, Awan concludes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
